Only the other day, one friend of mine mentioned (if I remember well it was during the last Therion show in Belgium) that there seem to be very few bands that manage to couple opera with metal with any degree of success and indeed Therion are one of the few names to spring to my mind (for my opinion the presence of a self proclaimed diva soprano in a band don’t mean you have to make with opera metal music). What we get here is a side project of Dol Ammad’s main song-writer; Thanasis Lightbridge. With the contributions of soprano Kortessa and guitarist Dim (both also actives in Dol Ammad), this multi- instrumentalist creates a kind of heavenly encounter between electronic sonorities, techno music and progressive symphonic heavy metal… the whole coupled with a strange opera surrounding which really impress me. From the ice cold electro passages to the almost gothic overtones, to the prog influences and electro beats and varied female vocals, «The Universe Expands» is a breath of fresh air. Everything is cool. To sum things quickly up if you have been wondering why electro and metal usually don’t mix, try Dol Theeta and I’m convinced that you will be surprised.
